What does this statement tell you about Grendel, the first monster described in the selection from Beowulf? "The monster's / Thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws. . . " He has intelligence and cleverness.

What does Grendel's claw symbolize?

The claw is hung high beneath Heorot's roof (most likely on the outside beneath the gables) as a symbol of Beowulf's victory. Grendel's mother also sees it as a symbol, representing her personal loss and mankind's macabre sense of what might be an appropriate trophy.

Why would Grendel be described as being intended to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper?

Fate intended Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper. They will defeat him. Why does Grendel relish the sight he sees in Herot (lines 21-26)? He relishes the sight because he intends to tear the life from sleeping people because he wants food.

What was Grendel's one thought?

Grendel states in the novel that he thinks Hrothgar's men are animals and that they waste lives. However, the humans think otherwise, they think that Grendel is a supernatural monster that is here to kill them. So, due to circumstances I think the humans were the monsters and Grendel was not.
