What are the most common myths about communication?

Communication is a cure all
Communicating is just common sense
Communication quantity over quality

Explain the differences between the three models of communication: linear, interactive, and transactional.

Linear- involves a sender who sends a message through a channel to a receiver in an atmosphere of noise
Interactive- basically the same as linear, except the interactive model of communication includes feedback. Introduction of feedback indicates that communication is a two-way progress. Also includes fields of experience.
Transactional- basically the same as interactive except you are sending and receiving simultaneously, mostly non verbally. Claims that communications affects all parties involved. Involves content dimension and relationship dimension

Define the basic communication elements contained in the communication models

Channel- medium through which a message travels; oral or written
Sender- initiator/encoder of a message
Receiver- decoder of message
Message- stimulus that produces meaning
Encode-
Decode-
Context- environment in which communication occurs
Fields of Experience- Include our cultural background, ethnicity, geographic location, extent of travel, and general personal experiences accumulated over the course of a lifetime
Noise- interference with effective transmission and reception of a message
Feedback- a receiver's verbal and nonverbal responses to a message

Explain the two aspects of every message: Content and relationship.

Content Dimension- refers to what is actually said or done.

Relationship Dimension- refers to how that message defines or redefines the associations between individuals. (how the message shows the relationship between the two).

How do constructive vs destructive communication climates influence relationships?

Constructive communication climate- composed of a willingness to communicate and a pattern of supportiveness. (want to communicate).

Destructive communication climate- composed of an unwillingness to communicate and a pattern of defensiveness. (don't want to communicate).

Define communication competence and describe the skills needed to be an effective and appropriate communicator.

Communication competence- engaging in communication that is perceived to be both effective and appropriate in a given context. (used at the right time, in the right way).

Effectiveness- the degree to which we have progressed toward the goal.

Appropriateness- how fitting a behavior is to the context.

Explain the role of rules in communication contexts.

-an easily followed "law" that indicates what behavior is obligated, preferred, or prohibited in certain contexts. (what is, or is not acceptable).

-Some rules are explicitly stated (directly expressed) such as "no smoking".

-Most rules are implied (indirectly indicated) such as "don't steal food from someone elses cart in the grocery store".

List the characteristics of an ethical communicator.

Respect- treating others how you want to be treated.

Honesty- avoiding lying.

Fairness- permitting people to express their points of view.

Choice- allowing people to make their own choices free of force.

Responsibility- acknowledging consequences to our communication.
