Which of the following answers does not refer to the characteristics of twinaxial cabling?

Our This vs. That series compares two products that have similar applications with different constructions that allow them to be useful in different applications. Both coaxial cable and twinaxial cable are used in data processing and information, but some applications may have specific requirements for voltage, range, and other factors that may make one type of cable more optimal than the other.

What is Coaxial Cable?

Coaxial cable is used in the transmission of video, communications, and audio. These cables are designed to transmit high-frequency signals and data with low loss due to environmental factors and interference. Allied stocks a wide variety of coaxial cables that can vary in terms of its impedance, environmental temperature, working voltage, signal loss at specific frequencies, power rating, and cost.

Coaxial cable’s construction may vary depending on the application that it is used for. Many conventional coax cables feature a copper wire and copper mesh shield to remain flexible while preventing signal leakage. Coax cables are also available in military-grade. These cables are referred to as RGs and are used in applications where military specifications are needed, as well as direct burial applications. Coaxial cables can also meet M17 military specifications. You can learn more about the differences between RG and M17 coaxial cable here.

What is Twinaxial Cable?

Twinaxial cable is commonly used in data transmission and information systems applications. This cable uses two twisted conductors surrounded by a common shield. The two conductors provide more protection from environmental factors and lower cable loss. Twinax cable loses its effectiveness in long-range situations over 15 MHz. It is primarily used in short-range, high-speed signaling applications. Twinax cables also meet military M17 specifications.

How Do They Compare?

There are a lot of similarities between coaxial and twinaxial cable. Both are used in data transmission and information system applications, along with the protection of the signal from interference. Coax and Twinax also both have military specs, which allows them to be used in applications requiring military standards. These cables are identified as RG or M17.

The biggest difference between these two types of cables is their construction. Twinaxial cable features two conductors instead of one, allowing them to provide a better protected and clearer signal, but only in very short range and high-speed applications. Coaxial cable is more versatile in its usage, and it is able to carry low-frequency signals such as audio. This makes it an ideal cable to use for radiofrequency and cable transmission applications.

Easy-to-configure and cost-effective, the IBM 5250 Express adapters prepare you for the future of twinax while maintaining the compatibility and function of our current family of 5250 Emulation adapters.

When used with a compatible terminal emulation program, the 5250 Express ISA, PCI, and PC Card adapters enable PCs to attach to a System/36, System/38, or AS/400 host.

Compatible IBM 5250 terminal emulation programs for attachment to the AS/400 include AS/400 Client Access, Personal Communications AS/400, 5250 Express Program 4.0, and 5250 Enhanced Link for DOS, Version 3.0.

Compatible 5250 terminal emulation programs for attachment to the System/36 and System/38 include 5250 Express Program 4.0, and 5250 Enhanced Link for DOS, Version 3.0.

The 5250 Express ISA Adapter and IBM 5250 Express PC Card are compatible with the IBM 5250 Emulation for Windows (R) Version 1.1 and support attachment to both System/3X and AS/400 hosts.

Attachment is made via an appropriate cabling system, such as the IBM 6299 Hub for Midrange Systems, either directly to the host Twinaxial Workstation Controller or indirectly via a 5294, 5394, or 5494 Remote Control Unit.

The 5250 Express adapters provide usability and performance enhancements such as Plug and Play and seven physical links that you can use with current System/3X and AS/400 hosts. The new family of adapters helps you build for the future by supporting the 5250 Express Data Stream.

The 5250 Express Data Stream supports two modes of operation to increase performance: optimized mode and 2 Mbps mode. Optimized mode reduces the number of bits required to transmit the same amount of data when compared to the standard 5250 data stream. When used with supported AS/400 systems such as the AS/400 Advanced Entry 9401 Model 150, the 5250 Express Data Stream runs in optimized mode and provides nearly twice the media throughput to 5250 Express Adapters, compared to the throughput to other 5250-type devices.

If all devices on a Twinaxial Workstation Controller port (up to seven devices per port) are 5250 Express adapters running software that supports the 5250 Express Data Stream, then 2 Mbps mode is operational and the line speed doubles from 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps. If a mix of 5250 Express adapters and standard 5250-type devices are attached to the same workstation controller port, then the line speed remains at 1 Mbps. AS/400 systems such as the AS/400 Advanced Entry 9401 Model 150 support the 2 Mbps mode.

The result of enabling both optimized and 2 Mbps modes is an increase in media throughput to nearly four times more than the media throughput of other 5250-type devices. Although the media performance will increase, actual performance improvements realized will vary depending on both PC and AS/400 processor speed, memory, and application load. For more detail, refer to the Networking Hardware Product Offerings 5250 Emulation Home Page on the Internet at URL:

    //www.networking.ibm.com/525/525home.html

Production Status: Each Machine is manufactured from new parts, or new and serviceable used parts (which perform like new parts). In some cases, the Machine may not be new and may have been previously installed. Regardless of the Machine's productions status, IBM's warranty terms apply.

The IBM Warranty: IBM warrants that each Machine (1) is free from defects in materials and workmanship and (2) conforms to IBM's Official Published Specifications. IBM calculates the expiration of the warranty period from the Machine's Date of Installation. The date on your receipt is the Date of Installation, unless IBM or your reseller informs you otherwise.

During the warranty period, IBM or your reseller will provide warranty service under the type of service designated for the Machine and will manage and install engineering changes that apply to the Machine. IBM or your reseller will specify the type of service.

For a feature, conversion, or upgrade, IBM or your reseller may require that the Machine on which it is installed be (1) the designated serial-numbered Machine and (2) at an engineering-change level compatible with the feature, conversion, or upgrade. Some of these transactions (called "Net-Priced" transactions) may include additional parts and associated replacement parts that are provided on an exchange basis. All removed parts become the property of IBM and must be returned to IBM.

Replacement parts assume the remaining warranty of the parts they replace.

If a Machine does not function as warranted during the warranty period, IBM in its sole discretion will repair, replace it (with a Machine that is at least functionally equivalent), or refund the purchase price. To obtain coverage under the warranty you will be required to present proof of purchase.

This warranty is non-transferable by the end-user customer.

Warranty Service: To obtain warranty service for the Machine, you should contact your reseller or call IBM. In the U.S., call IBM at 800-IBM-SERV (426-7378). In Canada, call IBM at 800-465-6666. You will be required to present proof of purchase.

Depending on the Machine, the service may be 1) a "Repair" service at your location (called "On-site") or at one of IBM's or a reseller's service locations (called "Carry-in") or 2) an "Exchange" service, either On-site or Carry-in.

When a type of service involves the exchange of a Machine or part, the item IBM or your reseller replaces becomes its property and the replacement becomes yours. The replacement may not be new, but will be in good working order and at least functionally equivalent to the item replaced.

It is your responsibility to:

  1. Obtain authorization from the owner (for example, your lessor) to have IBM or your reseller service a Machine that you do not own

  2. Where applicable, before service is provided:
    1. Follow the problem determination, problem analysis, and service request procedures that IBM or your reseller provide.

    2. Secure all programs, data, and funds contained in a Machine.

    3. Inform IBM or your reseller of changes in a Machine's location.

    4. For a Machine with exchange service, remove all features, parts, options, alterations, and attachments not under warranty service. Also, the Machine must be free of any legal obligations or restrictions that prevent its exchange.
  3. Be responsible for less of, or damage to, a machine in transit when you are responsible for the transportation charges.

Extent of Warranty: IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of a Machine.

Misuse, accident, modification, unsuitable physical or operating environment, improper maintenance by you, or failure caused by a product for which IBM is not responsible may void the warranties.

These warranties replace all other warranties, express or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. However, some laws do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties. If these laws apply, then all express and implied warranties are limited in duration to the warranty period. No warranties apply after that period.

In Canada, warranties include both warranties and conditions.

Some jurisdictions do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you.

Limitation of Liability: Circumstances may arise where, because of a default on IBM's part (including fundamental breach) or other liability (including negligence and misrepresentation), you are entitled to recover damages from IBM. In each such instance, regardless of the basis on which you are entitled to claim damages, IBM is liable only for:

  1. Bodily injury (including death), and damage to real property and tangible personal property.

  2. The amount of any other actual loss or damage, up to the greater of $100,000 or the charge for the Machines that is the subject of the claim.

Under no circumstances is IBM liable for any of the following:

  1. Third-party claims against you for losses or damages (other than those under the first item listed above)

  2. Loss of, or damage to, your records or data

  3. Economic consequential damages (including lost profits or savings) or incidental damages, even if IBM is informed of their possibility

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights, which vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

All other terms and conditions are the same as those applicable to the IBM machines in which the feature is installed.

Help and Service Information: During the warranty period, call 800-426-7299 for support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to answer any questions regarding your new IBM option. Response time will vary depending on the number and nature of calls received. If you need warranty service, return or exchange is available. In addition, if your IBM option is installed in an IBM computer, you may be entitled to service at your location. Your technical support representative can help you determine the best alternative.
