learning then development
learning is the acquisition of signs by means of info from others and deliberate teaching
development occurs as child internalizes signs so as to be able to think and solve problems individually (called self-regulation)
steps to self-regulation: 1. learning that actions and sounds have meaning, 2. practice of these actions and sounds, 3. the use of these actions, sounds, and symbols/signs to think and solve problems w/o help
private speech = children incorporate the speech of others and then use that speech to help themselves solve problems
zone of proximal development = most effect learning; cannot accomplish alone but can w/ help/ not yet learned but capable of learning
mediation = adults mediate/ give "psychological tools" to kids to help them solve problem by "breaking them down" for example
scaffolding = mediation on purpose: planfully helping a learner move from a current level to an individual level
to a new level
- cognitive apprenticeship: describes entire process of modeling, coaching, scaffolding, and evaluation typically seen during one-to-one instruction
cooperative learning = learning can happen w/ peers since peers are models of a slightly more advanced thinking
